Smart Interrupt – Mercruiser OMC Universal Electronic Shift Interrupt Switch Kit
Don’t get stuck in gear!
- Real Time 5 Visitor Right Now
This method interrupts your engine to allow transition form gear into neutral using information from a cable position sensor, this is a different method than was originally designed from the OEM. This is considered an aftermarket performance modification, and as with any performance mod in which you remove or bypass OEM parts, you do so at your own risk and liability. By purchasing this device you will hold harmless Marsden Industrial Services, Inc. from any problems that may occur either directly or indirectly from result of its installation.

Millions of boaters know the difficulty of docking a boat when it’s stuck in gear. If the interrupt doesn’t work you have to turn off the ignition to slow forward momentum and you can’t switch into reverse without restarting.
“Don’t get stuck in gear!”
The Smart Interrupt uses a high tech USB sensor to determine the position of your shift cable. This system provides a reliable and fully adjustable Interrupt duration.
Here’s a YouTube video describing the product.
– You can use the Smart Interrupt and the factory interrupt switch together as a redundant system!
– If you have bypassed or removed the factory interrupt switch from your OMC or Mercruiser, then the Smart Interrupt is a solution for you!
– Quick easy install
– No mechanical switches to wear out or break.
– Adjustable duration controls how long the engine is interrupted.
– If you have a high RPM idle, you can increase the interrupt duration.
– If you have a low RPM idle, you can decrease the interrupt duration.
– Reliable precision electronic circuitry made with military grade components.
– Works on HEI distributors! Interrupts either “Normally Closed” or “Normally Open” systems.
PROBLEMS WITH OEM INTERRUPTS
– These micro-switches are activated when tension is exerted on the lower shift cable. Over time, wear occurs, parameters change, and reliability is affected.
– Ideally, the switch is only activated when transitioning from gear into neutral, this is not always the case.
– Stalling can occur when shifting and also, randomly during operation.
– This was the simplest and lowest cost method available at the time and has since been replaced by electronic methods.

The Smart Interrupt will generate an interrupt for any Marine engine. Mounting of the USB sensor is the most important part. If your Mercruiser has a shift assist spring, as in the video, installation is easy. Basically, in any application, as long as the USB Smart sensor can be mounted along side of the shift cable linkage so that the sensor’s linkage “moves” in parallel movement.
The video describes the installation and operation. There are three pins on the control module for either “Normally Open” or “Normally Closed” interrupt methods. It could be wired in parallel to the existing interrupt switch. You are either grounding the coil to interrupt (which is the Normally Open method) or you would be disconnecting power to the coil (which is the Normally Closed method).
We get asked a lot for installation instructions, but the Smart Interrupt’s Output is basically just a SPDT Relay. It turns “off” or “on”, meaning, it’s wired to either “Open a Circuit” or to “Close a Circuit ”. Once you understand that, installation is easy. Try googling SPDT Relay.
